One of the most common reasons people tell me why they haven’t been able to lose weight is lack of motivation.

It can be really frustrating – you say you want something and then you just don’t do what you know you should be doing, or you do things you know you shouldn’t be doing, right?  Why is that?  Well there can be a few different reasons which I’m going to discuss, so keep reading!

Do You Have Low Thyroid Hormones?

Firstly being tired or exhausted, and there can be good reasons for that, not only lack of sleep but also low thyroid hormones which are more common than most people realise.  Low thyroid hormones or interference in your body’s ability to use your thyroid hormones leads to not only the feeling of not being motivated or bothered to do the things you normally enjoy, but many other symptoms too.  And even a so-called ‘normal’ thyroid function test won’t always show there is a problem. 

Other common signs and symptoms include weight gain, low moods/depression, fatigue, cold hands and feet or feeling the cold much more than others, dry skin, brittle nails, constipation and raised cholesterol.  You may also experience anxiety too.

Chronic stress can lead to hormonal imbalances and low adrenal hormones, which together with your thyroid hormones regulate your energy.  Stress also lowers thyroid hormone levels, as does autoimmune disease which destroys the thyroid gland – known as Hashimoto’s disease.

You Don’t Know What You Really Want!

Another big reason you lack motivation is because you’re not clear on exactly what it is you want.  In the case of weight loss, it’s not actually what you want is it?  What you want are the feelings you’ll enjoy when you’ve reached your ideal shape and size, like confidence, happiness, a sense of pride and achievement, being able to do activities you really enjoy, take on new challenges and more.

This is also one of the big reasons you might have achieved a weight loss goal in the past and then stacked all the weight back on.  Apart from the fact that your diet and exercise messed up your hormones and set you up for rebound weight gain (a story for another day) is that you no longer had a goal!  You lost the weight and now there was nothing to focus on!

So you need to pick a long-term goal, which will continue to change, but keeps you focussed.   I often say to potential clients ‘weight loss is just the journey – it’s not the destination’. 

Stop Focussing on What You Don’t Want!

You need to dig deep and work out what pleasure or positive things is losing that weight going to give you?  Working towards something positive is a much greater motivator than avoiding something painful or that you don’t want. 

When you keep focussing on the weight you want to lose, your focus is always on what you don’t want, and we tend to attract what we focus on! 

So shift your focus and get clear what it is that you really do want.  Think about the positive benefits of being healthy and how living in a healthy body will change your life – perhaps it’s having more energy, being more active, more flexible and all the other postive benefits you’ll enjoy.

Harness the Creative Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Once you’ve done that you can use the amazing power of your subconscious mind to help you achieve your goal through hypnosis and visualisation.  Practice visualising yourself at your ideal shape and size.  And by the way, if you have trouble visualising, don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be in colour like a movie! 

The most powerful way of visualising is to see things through your own eyes.  You could imagine looking at yourself in a mirror looking toned and slim, noticing how you stand and speak but then also imagine going through your day looking out at the world through your own two eyes with  your new, confident, happy perspectives and attitudes. 

You can even script out your perfect day in lots of detail on paper and create a ‘mind movie’ of that which you can run regularly when you’re waiting at the traffic lights, at the supermarket checkout or while the kettle is boiling.

Practicing this regularly throughout the day will help you to grow your motivation and your ability to see yourself achieving your goal.

Have You Made the Commitment?

Another big reason for lack of motivation is that you haven’t made the commitment to take action!  You just have wishful thoughts about whatever it is you say you want.

Yes, action requires effort and doing things you don’t want to do.  You are an adult though and doing things you don’t always want to do is part of life. You don’t have a parent there to make you do those things anymore - you just have to do it yourself!

All progress comes at a price - whether it’s time, money or effort and let’s face it, everything you ever achieved that you value required one or all of those things.  It required you to push yourself out of your comfort zone and do something new, to be consistently taking action.

How to Start Creating Change Easily

A simple way to start creating permanent change is to create new, healthy habits and the easiest way to do that is to simply substitute in a new routine.  You see, a habit is a 3 step sequence of cue or trigger, routine and reward. 

So if you eat junk food because you feel emotional, find a new routine instead of eating junk food that will give you the same reward!  Ok, I know, there are few things that give the same reward as chocolate but you could change it up to a cup of hot cocoa made with stevia (a healthy sugar substitute) and unsweetened almond or coconut milk!

It takes about 30 days of consistent daily action to create a new habit but the beautiful thing about healthy habits, is that like any habit, they run on autopilot.  That means once they’re created, you do them automatically without even thinking about it - you don’t need to use up your limited willpower trying to make decisions about whether you will or won’t do something!

So, in summary:

  • get clear on what you want
  • stop focussing on what you don’t want
  • start harnessing the power of your subconscious mind with visualisation
  • Begin swapping out old routines for new healthy ones that bring the same positive rewards
  • Commit to taking action!
