08 Oct Drink this to burn more fat and stay younger
Many people start the day with a glass of warm water and lemon juice but here is a super duper version to kick-start your day. I’m making this a new daily habit.
So what is it and why would you want to try it? I think of it as a kind of elixir and you’ll see why shortly.
* Large glass of warm (not hot) filtered water
* Juice of half a lemon or whole lime
* ½ tsp turmeric
* ½ tsp cinnamon powder
* ¼tsp ground black pepper
* ¼ tsp ginger powder
* Pinch cayenne
* ½ tsp untreated honey
Add the juice, honey and spices to the water and stir really well to dissolve as much as possible – keep stirring while you drink it to stop the turmeric sinking to the bottom.
Another variation is to swap out a quarter to a third of the water for coconut milk but if you want to lose weight get the reduced fat version (ie Spiral Foods brand), which still does have some of the good fat in it.
Why try it?
Lemon and lime juice alkalise your body. Most of us are over-acidic and this can contribute to weight gain and difficulty losing it. One of the reasons is that when we are over-acidic our enzymes that speed up all our biochemical reactions don’t work efficiently. Studies have shown reducing your acid load helps drop weight without dieting!
How does something acidic help to alkalise your body? It was something I always wondered about too! It’s a little complicated to explain but the citric acid in lemon and lime juice binds to hydrogen ions (which create acidity) and that hydrogen is eventually breathed out as water vapour.
Turmeric, ginger and cayenne pepper have all been scientifically proven to reduce inflammation and promote healthy aging. Again, inflammation is an often overlooked cause of weight gain and difficulty losing it. It’s also what drives all the chronic diseases we associate with aging and is the cause of aches and pains.
Reducing inflammation will help you live a longer, happier and healthier life. One of the reasons Indian people are believed to look younger than other nationalities as they age is because they eat lots of curries that contain many anti-inflammatory spices and herbs.
Turmeric also helps improve detoxification in your liver cells.
Cayenne also helps to boost metabolism and cinnamon has been proven in a number of studies to improve insulin sensitivity which means it helps your fat cells to open up and let go of the fat!
Ginger and cayenne both improve circulation, helping to get more oxygen and nutrients to your cells and remove waste and carbon dioxide.
Black pepper helps to increase absorption of curcurmin, the beneficial part of turmeric and other nutrients. It has other benefits too, including boosting metabolism, suppressing fat accumulation (in mice, so possibly humans too), boosting digestion, detoxification and more.
Improving detoxification is important for health and fat loss because toxins your body hasn’t been able to get rid of in the past are interfering with your hormones, another often overlooked cause of weight issues. Many toxins are stored in your fat cells and when you start to burn fat toxins are released from your fat cells into your blood and they can slow down your metabolism. Having good detoxification pathways is crucial to keep the fat burning happening.
Reducing inflammation and improving detoxification also has the added benefit of boosting your energy and strengthening your immune system, reducing your risk for cancer and lots more!
Coconut milk contains healthy fats (medium chain triglycerides and lauric acid) that may boost your metabolism and will help you to stay feeling fuller and give you more energy! That doesn’t mean you should go overboard though, so stick with the reduced fat coconut milk version.
Unprocessed honey does contain some wonderful ingredients including vitamins but what you’ll get in half a teaspoon is probably not so significant – it’s more to make the taste palatable and actually the whole thing is not unpleasant!
Will you see instant results?
I don’t know, because it depends what’s going on with your individual biochemistry, but with all these benefits wouldn’t you want to at least give it a go for a few months and see what happens?
Just a note though, because we’re all biochemically different, not all herbs and spices will suit everyone so if you do notice this upsets your gut then eliminate one spice at a time and see what happens. Cayenne is the probably going to be the most likely culprit so try eliminating that first and if you already know you don’t tolerate chilli then don’t include it.
Also, if you want to be healthy, please buy organic herbs and spices! Many non-organic herbs and spices are contaminated with chemicals from pesticides and fungicides and are irradiated. I can’t guarantee that some imported herbs and spices are not irradiated because it may be required by quarantine regulations, but generally contamination is way lower.
Save time by premixing the spices in a bowl and really stir them well, then store in a glass jar in a dark cupboard. The following should be enough for 2 weeks if you drink it morning and night or a whole month if you drink it once a day.
* 14 tsp turmeric powder
* 14 tsp cinnamon powder
* 7 tsp ginger powder
* 7tsp ground black pepper
* ¼ – ½ tsp cayenne
Use 1 ½ tsp per glass of elixir
